One Ounce of Pure Silver …

U.S. Silver Eagle

The Silver Eagle is the world’s most famous and most popular silver bullion coin. It is also a favorite holiday gift that will be treasured for many years to come!

Circulating silver coins disappeared in the 1960’s due to the rising value of silver – but by the early 1980’s, the demand for silver was so great that silver bullion coins burst onto the scene. Mexico was one of the first nations to produce a one-ounce silver coin exclusively for collectors and investors.

Realizing the U.S. was missing out on an opportunity to compete with the silver coins from Mexico and elsewhere, President Ronald Reagan authorized the U.S. Mint to produce the first U.S. silver bullion coin.

As a result, the U.S. Silver Eagle was first issued in 1986 … and it immediately became a worldwide phenomenon. The coin was struck in one full troy ounce of pure silver, making it affordable to own and easy to store. With its one-ounce weight and diameter of more than 1.5 inches, it was the largest and heaviest silver coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint to that date.

One of the reasons the Silver Eagle has been such a success is the spectacular design. The obverse is sculptor Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty that first appeared on silver half dollars from 1916 to 1947. This is one of the most beautiful designs in U.S. Mint history, and the coin’s large size and exceptional strikes bring it to life like never before.

Another reason for the coin’s popularity is that fact that the silver weight and 99.9% silver purity are guaranteed by the U.S. government. In fact, both the weight and purity are inscribed on the reverse.

The 2016 Silver Eagle marked the 30th anniversary of the coin – a testament to its enduring value, as well as its popularity both in the United States and around the world.
