The Original New York Penny
Prior to the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence in 1776, people in New York used whatever coins they could find. Most copper coins came from Europe, including the copper Duit from Holland. Because of its size and copper composition, the Duit was known as a “Penny” and is renowned as the Original New York Penny. Struck between 1726 and 1794, it was issued by the Dutch East India Company and features the company’s initials “VOC” on one side. It is over 200 years old and comes in a deluxe presentation folder.
