The Washington Quarter was first issued in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Washington was one of America’s greatest patriots and is renowned as the “Father of our Nation.” In addition to leading America’s fight against the British in the American Revolution, he was also instrumental in creating the Constitution and served as America’s first President.
The original Washington Quarters were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints – and featured the respective Mint Marks of each Mint – until 1964. In 1965, the U.S. Mint made dramatic changes. First, the composition of the Washington Quarter changed from .900 silver to copper-nickel due to the rising price of silver bullion. And second, even though the coins were still made at all three Mints, no coins were made with Mint Marks in 1965, 1966, and 1967.
This collection includes one of each of the 1965, 1966, and 1967 Washington Quarters – the first three years of the copper-nickel coin and the only three years that no Washington Quarters were made with Mint Marks. Previously, only those coins from the Philadelphia Mint were struck with no Mint Marks … but it is impossible to tell which 1965, 1966, and 1967 Washington Quarters were made at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints because none has a Mint Mark and they all look alike.
Mint Marks returned to Washington Quarters in 1968, so this is a unique collection that features coins from a long-gone era. The coins were struck up to 40 years ago, and most have been worn out or damaged in circulation – but the coins in this collection have been specially selected for their superior collector quality. The complete three-coin set is featured in a custom display wallet and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
