The Silver Libertad coin was unveiled in 1982 and is struck in both silver and gold versions.  The history of the coin itself is relatively short, but the real history is in the mint that produces it. The National Mint of Mexico, or Casa de Moneda de Mexico, is by far the oldest minting facility in the Americas. It was established by Spain in 1535 and has been minting coins ever since.

The reverse design depicts a winged Victoria of Mexican Independence situated in front of a landscape of volcanoes. The Winged Victory goddess, originating from Roman designs, is considered a significant and historic symbol in Mexico. The volcanoes, named Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, celebrate two lovers from a pre-Columbian legend.

Struck in 1/20 ounce .999 fine silver, this coin is featured in a semi-rope bezel with an 18" rope chain included.
