During the 20th century, the U.S. Mint introduced three Half Dollar coins – Walking Liberty, Franklin, and Kennedy Half Dollars – and this collection features all three coins that were made in 90% silver and all coins are over half a century old.
All three coins were struck for circulation in 90% silver, a level of precious metal that has not been seen in circulation for generations. Most 90% silver coins have already been melted for the silver, leaving few for collectors. It’s increasingly hard to find even one of these coins, let alone all three in a single collection.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was struck by the U.S. Mint from 1916-1947. This is considered one of America’s most beautiful coins. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wrapped in a U.S. flag and walking towards the rising sun. The reverse shows a magnificent eagle with its wings stretched. It was America Half Dollar from World War I through the “Roaring Twenties,” the Great Depression, and World War II, but it has been out of issue for over 70 years since 1947.
The Franklin Half Dollar was issued 1948-1963 to honor Benjamin Franklin, the legendary colonial patriot, inventor, and statesman. Franklin was the first historical person other than a President to appear on a circulating U.S. coin. The reverse of the coin shows the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and a tiny eagle.
The Kennedy Half Dollar was first issued as a memorial coin shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. It was first released in 1964. The portrait of Kennedy on the obverse was approved by Kennedy’s widow, Jackie Kennedy; the reverse is the Presidential Coat of Arms. The first-year 1964 coin is the only coin issued for circulation in 90% silver.
Each coin is protected in a clear holder, and the three-coin set is displayed in a custom presentation box. The collection is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
